A Win is a Win

One of my friends hails from a county that is known for its very competitive steer show during its annual 4-H fair. There’s a list of last names that win every year and try to outdo everyone else no matter the cost.

Tears are shed by the winner and the losers. The judge may not be asked back depending on who he or she chooses.

There are stories of cheating and underhanded tactics used in the past just to be the one who gets that championship handshake at the end. There are some serious bragging rights attached to the championship trophy buckle.

I knew my friend’s family had participated in the steer show, so I just assumed showing cattle was part of her background as well.

It wasn’t until decades later that she revealed the truth. She had never shown a steer or heifer during her time in 4-H. Every championship ribbon she had was from showing cats.

The same cat that catches mice in the barn and tussles with the occasional possum could be a prime example of its kind. The old tom cat with half an ear and a chunk of hair missing from its tail may not be the one to enter, but well put together female cat could place decently in her class.

Others have gone to even more unique tactics to secure a win. Years ago, at my local 4-H fair there was a pair of ducks that placed nicely and earned their exhibitor a pretty blue ribbon for his efforts.

After the judging was over, it was discovered that the imaginative competitor had nabbed the fowl from the farm pond behind his house that morning and cleaned them up enough to enter them. I hope he got to keep the ribbon just for his quick reaction time alone.
